How to take everything from ChatGPT

Hi Reader,

Quick note— the link to the Cowork Setup Guide in last week’s email was broken. Here’s the working link: Cowork Setup Guide. Apologies for that.

People feel stuck in ChatGPT because it "knows them."

Custom instructions. Conversation history. Preferences it's picked up over months. Walking away feels like starting over.

Here's the thing— that context is portable. All of it.

I've migrated a dozen clients this year. The process is the same every time— four steps.

Step 1: Extract What ChatGPT Knows About You

Open a new chat and paste this:

"What do you know about me? Include my preferences, communication style, recurring topics, and patterns you've noticed."

Keep asking "What else?" until it starts repeating itself. Copy the full response into a doc.

Step 2: Copy Your Custom Instructions

Click your profile icon → Customize ChatGPT.

Two text boxes:

  • "What would you like ChatGPT to know about you?"
  • "How would you like ChatGPT to respond?"

Copy both. This is your AI operating system— most people forget it exists.

Step 3: Export Your Best Conversations

Settings → Data Controls → Export Data.

ChatGPT emails you a download link with a file called conversations.json. Pick your 5-10 most valuable threads and copy those.

Step 4: Build Your Claude Project

Go to claude.ai → Projects → Create a new project.

Upload everything from Steps 1-3 into the project knowledge. Then paste this:

"Here's my context from ChatGPT. Extract my preferences, note my patterns, and tell me what's missing."

That last line does the real work. Claude identifies gaps you didn't know you had.

Use the Migration as a Reset

Keep what worked. Leave the clutter behind.

You might realize half your ChatGPT habits were holding you back.

I recorded the whole process— Claude doing every step hands-free while I watched. Worth a look if you want to see it in action.

The Full Migration Kit

I put together the complete ChatGPT → Claude Migration Kit— same system I use when onboarding consulting clients. Extraction prompts, Claude Project templates, and a copy-paste guide for the whole process.

Grab the Migration Kit here →

Next week— the 6 files I build before I touch any AI tool. The foundation that makes a migration like this actually stick.

Keep building,

-Dan

P.S. If you want help building context systems like this for your team— the kind that make every AI tool work better, with your actual business data— that's what I do. Let's talk.
